Payload capacity is GVWR minus curb weight — what your truck can carry, tongue weight included. How to find yours and why it runs out before towing capacity.

What payload capacity is
Payload capacity is the weight your truck can carry on top of its own weight — every passenger, every cooler in the bed, and anything pressing down on the hitch. The formula is simple: GVWR minus curb weight. GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) is the maximum your truck is allowed to weigh once it’s fully loaded, set by the manufacturer for the brakes, axles, tires and frame it actually has. Curb weight is what the truck weighs empty — full fuel tank, no people, no cargo. Subtract curb weight from GVWR and what’s left is payload.
It’s a fixed budget, not an estimate you can talk your way around. Every truck has one number for GVWR and, once it’s built, one number for curb weight, so the payload figure they produce is fixed too. A careful driver or a slow speed doesn’t change it — payload is set by the hardware underneath the truck, the same for every trip until the truck itself changes.
You don’t actually have to do that subtraction yourself. The tire-and-loading sticker in the driver’s door jamb states an “occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX lbs” figure, and that number is payload capacity — already computed by the manufacturer for the truck as it left the factory, options and all.
Where the numbers come from
GVWR is printed on the certification label, which sits in the same door jamb as the tire-and-loading label that carries the payload figure. Curb weight is a little more scattered: it’s on the manufacturer’s spec sheet or towing guide for your exact trim, sometimes in the owner’s manual, or you can drive the empty truck onto a certified scale and read it directly.
Be careful with brochure numbers. The curb weight a manufacturer advertises is almost always for the base trim with no options. A bigger engine, four-wheel drive, a tow package, a sunroof, running boards — every one of those adds weight to the truck itself, and every pound the truck gains at the curb is a pound gone from payload. Two trucks with the same GVWR can have meaningfully different payload capacities once options are added, so the number that matters is the one for your truck as built, not the one in the ad.
What counts against it
Payload isn’t just what you toss in the bed. It’s everyone riding in the cab, driver included; everything in the bed — tools, coolers, camping gear; aftermarket add-ons like a heavier bumper, a bed toolbox, or a winch, which stop being “cargo” and become part of the truck’s weight the moment they’re bolted on but still cost you payload unless your curb weight already reflects them; and the trailer’s tongue weight(bumper-pull) or pin weight (fifth-wheel and gooseneck).
That last one is the part people forget. A trailer rides on its own axles, so it’s easy to think of towing as separate from what the truck is carrying — but tongue and pin weight don’t go to the trailer’s axles. They press straight down on the truck’s hitch, and the truck carries them exactly like it carries a passenger or a cooler.

The 7,000 lb trailer sits in the table for reference only: it rides on its own axles, and the 900 lb of tongue weight is the only part of it the truck carries. This truck is under its rated payload, and TowCheck shows that as green with 150 lb of margin; under 100 lb of margin turns it amber, so a heavy cooler would do it. A fifth passenger or a heavier trailer tongue and it’s over. Within its rating, but tight enough that it deserves a second look before you hitch up.
Why payload runs out before towing capacity
Notice what never showed up in that math: the truck’s towing capacity. This truck might carry an 11,000 lb tow rating in the brochure or owner’s manual, and the 7,000 lb trailer above is nowhere near it — but towing capacity was never the number in play. What mattered was that a 7,000 lb trailer at a 12.9% tongue weight puts 900 lb on the truck’s payload, not on its towing capacity. Towing capacity limits what the truck can pull; payload limits what it can carry, and tongue and pin weight are carried, not pulled. That’s why a truck can be well within its rated towing capacity and still be over its payload rating at the same time — the single most common way a tow that looks fine on paper turns out not to be.
What to do if you’re over
A few options, roughly in order of how easy they are:
Take fewer people or less gear in the truck itself — every passenger and every item in the cab or bed counts against payload directly. Move cargo into the trailer instead of the truck bed, if the trailer’s own GVWR has room for it — most of that weight goes to the trailer’s axles, but roughly 10–15% of it comes back to the truck as tongue weight, more if it’s stowed ahead of the axles, so re-check tongue weight after the move. A weight-distribution hitch will not fix an over-payload truck; it redistributes tongue weight across axles for handling, but the truck’s GVWR and payload rating stay exactly the same, so the numbers above don’t move. If none of that gets you under, the real fix is a truck with more payload capacity — a heavier-duty trim or axle package rated for more.
Whichever option you pick, redo the math afterward rather than guessing at how much you freed up. Moving two coolers to the trailer, for instance, only helps if the trailer’s own GVWR has room to absorb them — otherwise you’ve just traded one overloaded vehicle for another — and even then roughly 10–15% of their weight comes back to the truck through the tongue, so the payload you freed is a little less than the coolers weighed. Is payload the same as towing capacity?
No. Towing capacity is what the truck can pull; payload is what it can carry. Tongue weight and pin weight count as cargo the truck carries, so a trailer eats into payload even though it rides on its own wheels.
Does a weight-distribution hitch increase payload?
No. A weight-distribution hitch redistributes some of the tongue weight onto the truck’s front axle and the trailer’s own axles, which helps handling, but the truck’s GVWR and payload rating don’t change. The weight is still there.
Can I exceed GVWR by a little?
